Diabetes means you have to be careful about what you eat and drink. When doctors first tell you that you have diabetes, you will go to a special part of the hospital.
Doctors will then come to explain diabetes to you and your family. There is a lot to know, and special medicine to take. So it will take some time to learn everything, but that’s okay.
You can look after your diabetes at home. You will see doctors every few weeks to make sure you’re staying healthy. If you’re confused, you can see a special doctor to talk about your feelings, too.
People from the hospital will also visit your school, so that everyone there knows a bit about diabetes, too. The doctors want to make sure your life can be as easy as possible while you and your family make sure you stay healthy.
Once a year, you’ll have a big check-up. The doctors will take how tall and heavy you are, and how well you’ve been taking your medicine. They might ask to do some tests on your blood or wee, too.
