We have two Assessment Units, P.A.U. (Paediatric Assessment Unit) situated at the Heartlands site and C.A.U. (Children’s Assessment Unit) based at Good Hope hospital.
The Assessment Units are a special part of the hospital where poorly children come to find out what’s wrong with them. You might have to wait a while – many children will be waiting to see a doctor when you arrive – but the Assessment Units are here to find out how to make you better.
You might have to stay a while, maybe most of the day. You might even be asked to stay the night, if the doctors decide that is best. The Assessment Units are friendly places, though, and the nurses and doctors are used to working with children. So you will be okay.
You will probably see a nurse first, and then wait a little longer for a doctor. You might be sent home. You might be asked to stay so doctors can watch you. Or you might be sent to another part of the hospital, where doctors who know about why you’re sick can help.
Your family and even friends will be able to visit you and stay with you the whole time. So don’t worry, the P.A.U. and C.A.U. are friendly and will help make your better!
